Culturally Grounded Skills for Supporting Mental Well-Being
Indigenous Mental Health First Aid is a 3-day culturally grounded training designed to strengthen the skills and confidence needed to provide initial support to Indigenous people experiencing mental health challenges.
This training recognizes that mental well-being is deeply connected to culture, community, history, identity, and belonging. Through an Indigenous lens, participants explore compassionate and practical ways to hold space, communicate with care, respond to crisis, and support others while also caring for their own well-being.
What You'll Learn
Throughout the three-day training, participants will explore:
-
Understanding mental health in Indigenous communities
-
Cultivating and tending to one's unique medicine bundle
-
Holding space and active listening
-
Gentle and compassionate communication
-
Vulnerability and trauma
-
Empathy fatigue and compassion fatigue
-
Practical application and role-playing
-
Self-care when supporting others
Strengthening Our Communities
At the heart of Indigenous Mental Health First Aid is the belief that strength, knowledge, and healing already exist within our communities.
By building confidence in how we listen, respond, and support one another, we can help create safer and more compassionate spaces for individuals, families, and communities experiencing mental health challenges.
Facilitator Training Available
We also offer Facilitator Training for those who want to become comfortable and confident delivering Indigenous Mental Health First Aid within their own communities.
This creates an opportunity for communities to build their own capacity and continue sharing culturally grounded mental health knowledge and support.
Facilitated by Stephanie Erickson, RCC
Founder of Strawberry Medicine Counselling Inc. and Indigenous Mental Health Clinician.
